A 1998 graduate of St. Lawrence tried -- but ultimately failed -- to "win Ben Stein's money."

Joshua Wennrich '98, a native of Canton, is now a second lieutenant stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Montana, and appeared on the popular television game show "Win Ben Stein's Money" on the Comedy Central cable network on April 18. He made it to the final round of questioning, pitting him directly against actor/host Stein in a "Best of 10 Test of Knowledge," in which Stein -- a former writer for The Wall Street Journal and other financial publications as well as a former speechwriter for President Richard Nixon -- prevailed. Stein is also a well-known actor, appearing in a host of films and television shows, (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, My Girl, Honeymoon In Vegas, "The Wonder Years") as well as in popular commercials.

Wennrich, who earned his degree in English (writing), wound up with $800 in winnings, rather than the "grand prize" of $5,000, for his stint on the show. "It's nice, but it's not like I can go on a vacation in Tahiti," he told the Watertown Daily Times.
