Viggo Mortensen '80 was awarded the Knight's Cross of Dannebrog April 16, 2010, as part of the official celebration of the 70th birthday of Queen Margarethe of Denmark. Mortensen was one of about 50 people to receive the honor.
The Order of Dannebrog is "a means of honoring and rewarding the faithful servants of the modern Danish state for meritorious civil or military service, for a particular contribution to the arts, sciences or business life or for those working for Danish interests." Mortensen's father is Danish, and he has lived there at various times.
A government major at St. Lawrence,
Mortensen has appeared in over 40 films and is also an accomplished musician,
author and artist. The University hosted a visit by Mortensen in 2003, which
included film screenings, book-signings and an exhibition of his paintings and
photography. He was awarded
an honorary degree at Commencement in 2006, where he delivered an address.
