Viggo Mortensen '80 has received his first nomination for a Golden Globe award, for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, for his portrayal of a Russian mobster in Eastern Promises. Nominations were announced December 13.

The 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards will take place January 13, 2008, at The Beverly Hilton with a live telecast airing on NBC at 8 p.m., Eastern. The awards are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Eastern Promises was also nominated for Best Motion Picture, Drama, and Best Original Score, Motion Picture. Other nominees for best actor in a dramatic motion picture are George Clooney, for Michael Clayton; Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood; James McAvoy, Atonement; and Denzel Washington, American Gangster.

A government major at St. Lawrence, Mortensen has appeared in over 40 films and is also an accomplished musician, author and artist. The University hosted a visit by Mortensen in 2003, which included film screenings, book-signings and an exhibition of his paintings and photography. He was awarded an honorary degree at Commencement in 2006, where he delivered an address.
