On June 15, 2006, the United Nations Association of the USA Council of Organizations awarded its prestigious Eleanore Schnurr Award to Virignia Hazzard '40. The award, presented annually, honors an individual for a long and exceptional commitment to the goals and work of the United Nations.

The award is named for Eleanore Schnurr, who for many years represented the Baptist World Alliance at the United Nations, working to promote human rights and the status of women.

Hazzard was selected for the award based on her own long commitment to women and her decades of service within the UN community. She has worked to improve the lives of women in developing countries at many levels and in many capacities, beginning with a stint in Morocco. Most recently she has focused on the issue of aging, and took part in the UN's Habitat Conference held recently in Vancouver, Canada.

A resident of Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Hazzard is retired from a position as deputy representative for UNICEF in China. She holds a master's degree from Columbia University and was awarded an honorary degree by St. Lawrence in 1991. Her undergraduate degree from St. Lawrence is in English; she is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and was a member of the women's basketball and tennis teams. Hazzard also received the Sol Feinstone Award from the University, for humanitarian service. She has been an active fund-raising volunteer for St. Lawrence as well.
