The Center for International and Intercultural Studies has awarded grants
for independent travel and research to six students and travel enrichment
grants to six students, allowing all to pursue research in other countries.
Independent travel and research grants allow selected students to conduct
research abroad during the break between semesters. Awarded grants for the
break between fall 2006 and spring 2007 were:
- Akosua A. Akuffo '08, of Accra, Ghana, "Exploring the Socio-Economic Cost of
Tourism in Trinidad and Barbados"
- Suzanne Bayard '07, of Meredith, NH, "Studying the Turkish Military's
Influence on Turkish Accession into the European Union," with travel to Brussels
and Strasbourg, France
- Sajana Blank '08, of Montpelier, VT, "Street Girls: The Realities of Life in
Nairobi's Informal Settlements through the Eyes of Non-Governmental Organization
Officials and the Children
- Kelly Goonan '07, of Liverpool, NY, "Visitor Experience at Parque Nacional
Volcan Arenal," in La Fortuna, Costa Rica
- Nicholas Johnson '07, of Wilbraham, MA, "Cinema Samurai: A Screenwriter's
Exploration of Feudal Japanese Culture"
- Kanti Shrestha '07, of Kathmandu, Nepal, "A Socio-economic Analysis of South
Asian Female Immigrants in London"; Shrestha will complete this research in March
Travel enrichment grants allow students participating in a regular program
of study abroad to pursue research requiring additional travel, either during
the semester or after the semester has ended. Grants for the spring of 2007
have been awarded to:

Volcanic Hazards in New Zealand," Australia program
- Erkinalp Kesikli '09, of Turkey, "The Positionality Problematic of
Classical Music in the Contemporary English and French Culture," France program
- Aaron Mead '08, of Shelburne Falls, MA, "The Use of Tracking and Nature
Awareness in Hunting by the Aboriginal Spinifex Culture," Australia program
- Elisa Prescott '08, of Waitsfield, VT, "Iceland: Pure Energy. A Look at
Iceland's Natural Resources which are helping to Shape the World's Future," Denmark
program
- Laura Rabinow '08, of Delmar, NY, "Education in Kenya: Connecting Policy to
Practice," Kenya program
- Jesus Ruiz '08, of Mesa, AZ, "Augusto Cesar Sandino in Nicaragua," Costa Rica program
