Professor of Canadian Studies Robert Thacker is among the first three winners of
the University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts Arts in Academics awards.
Thacker and two other graduates returned to give talks highlighting
their research and academic pursuits at the First Annual Arts in A
cademics Speaker Series on September 28, as part of the university's
50th Anniversary Homecoming celebration.
Each arts department nominated one graduate "who has gone on to a successful
career in academia and whose accomplishments in academic pursuits deserve
special recognition."
Thacker began his research career in 1976 as an MA student in the English
department at Waterloo. He earned the Ph.D. at the University of
Manitoba and, in addition to teaching at St. Lawrence has been "a scholar
uniquely bridging American and Canadian literature." Most recently,
a book by Thacker was published, based on 30 years of his research and
reflection, Alice Munro: Writing Her Lives (2005), the first
large-scale biography of the author.
