Shelley McConnell

Assistant Professor of Government Shelley McConnell participated in the Social Science Research Council's (SSRC) Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum in Managua, Nicaragua, May 11, 2010. Participants briefed the United Nations Resident Coordinator and his staff on electoral politics in Nicaragua.

The Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum (CPPF) was established in 2000 to strengthen the knowledge base and analytical capacity of the United Nations in conflict prevention and management, peacemaking and peacebuilding. The organization supports UN policymaking and operations by providing UN decision-makers access to leading scholars, experts and practitioners outside the UN system, through informal consultations, off-the-record briefings and commissioned research. CPPF has immediate access to senior UN decision-makers, first-hand experience with UN policy and operational planning, and an extensive network of experts who complement staff expertise. CPPF also has an advisory board of respected practitioners, policymakers and academics.

Meetings were held in Spanish, so the SSRC invited McConnell's participation as a Spanish-speaking scholar of Nicaraguan politics whose work focuses on democratic development as a means for conflict prevention and peace-making. She has researched Nicaragua's simultaneous transitions from war to peace and authoritarianism to democracy, and has worked for the United Nations on contracts. In addition, McConnell presented research at a major UN conference on the 20th anniversary of the Esquipulas Peace Accords.
