Shelley McConnell
Assistant Professor of Government Shelley McConnell is co-editor of a new book, The Sandinistas and Nicaragua Since 1979, published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. It includes a chapter by McConnell, titled "The Uncertain Evolution of the Electoral System," on Nicaragua's electoral politics.

Other editors are David Close, professor of political science at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Salvador Martí i Puig, professor of political science at the University of Salamanca.

Publishers state, "How has the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) affected Nicaragua and its politics since the Sandinista revolution of 1979? Addressing this question, the authors offer a comprehensive assessment, discussing the country's political institutions and public policy, its political culture, and its leadership, as well as the FSLN as a political party. Their focus is on contemporary issues, but they also carefully sketch Nicaragua's history since 1979 to show the evolution of both the FSLN and the nation."

McConnell has served as served as senior research associate director of the Americas Program at the Carter Center, and has been an official observer of elections in Nicaragua.
