Doing her home state proud, a St. Lawrence alumna was the first Green Mountain
State woman to finish the 16th KeyBank Vermont City Marathon, held in Burlington
May 30.
Sandra Houke Dickin '88, of Colchester, took the honor. According to the
Burlington Free Press, Dickin ran a personal best at the event by
about 20 minutes (3:04:06) and finished eighth overall among the race's 939
women runners. Of the 1,072 individual marathon runners, Dickin placed
72nd. In the 2003 event, Dickin was 31st among Vermont women with a time
of 3:25:12.
She told the paper, "I was shocked. This year I had more confidence with my
running. I went out too hard last year and died." Dickin also reported to the
paper that she returned to running just five years ago.
At St. Lawrence, Dickin earned her degree in sociology and participated in the
study abroad program in Spain.
