Two students nominated by the Canton Rotary Club for prestigious Ambassadorial
Scholarships were awarded them and both are graduates of St. Lawrence University.
Only three were awarded in the entire region, and it is highly unusual for two
to be awarded from the same club.
Katie Gauthier '04, of Canton, and Brooke James '06, coordinator of student
activities and leadership at St. Lawrence, were awarded the $24,000 scholarships,
which fund international travel and study. The awards were celebrated at a
recent Rotary Club meeting in Canton; Gauthier, studying towards a master's degree
in international studies at the University of Oregon, was unable to attend, but sent thanks.
According to Rotary International, "The purpose of the Ambassadorial
Scholarships program is to further international understanding and
friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical
areas. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for
undergraduate and graduate students, as well as for qualified professionals
pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill
ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their
homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home,
scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to
a greater understanding of their host country."
Host countries for ambassadors are chosen by the Rotary Foundation, but James says her
"top choices" are South Africa and Barbardos. She plans to study for a master's
degree in culture and heritage tourism in 2009-2010. Gauthier indicates that
her top picks are in Egypt and Uganda.
