Perhaps the loftiest of student traditions at St. Lawrence, Peak Weekend continued
its success streak with the 2002 event.
During the weekend, held this year October 4-6, the Outing Club attempts to place
participants on all 46 of the "high peaks" of the Adirondack Mountains. Enthusiasm
for the venture has waxed and waned through the years since its inception in the
early 1980's, and this year marks three successful tries in a row.
Coverage of the event captured a front-page spot in a local newspaper, the
Adirondack Daily Enterprise, based in in the Adirondack community of
Saranac Lake. The story, by former Hill News editor and current Enterprise
staffer Ed Forbes '02, quotes Sara Lewis '03, of Saratoga Springs, residential
coordinator of the Outing Club, as stating that 20 groups of students were
organized to accomplish this year's mission.
The broader goals of the event are to introduce students to the nearby Adirondack
region and to the activities of the Outing Club, the oldest student organization
at St. Lawrence. Inexperienced students tackle the "easier" climbs, while more
expert students handle the tougher ones.
