St. Lawrence University's Canton Initiative project was profiled in a New York Times story recently.

The September 6 story, in an "Our Towns" column by Iver Peterson, detailed the sometimes difficult relationship between St. Lawrence and Canton, and the person who is often at the center of it all: Vice President for Administrative Operations Thomas Coakley, a Canton native.

The Canton Initiative is the University program of partnership with the community for projects of mutual benefit. The Times column discussed how a climate of retail vibrancy assists recruiting and retention of students, faculty and staff, and the role that St. Lawrence and area businesses play in creating that atmosphere.

In addition to Coakley, several local business owners and politicians were quoted in the story.
