Mallory Mumford '06, of Lowville, NY, has been accepted by Teach For America,
the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors
who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools. In the fall,
Mumford, a government major, will be teaching elementary school in Eastern
North Carolina.
More than 6,500 graduating seniors and alumni from across the country applied to Teach
For America by the first application deadline of October 31, 2005; deadline for the
second round of applications is February 17, 2006.
"The application numbers we're seeing reflect college students' belief that educational
disparities must be our generation's civil rights issue. We're finding that graduating
seniors want to be a part of this network of leaders who are working together throughout
their lives to address this issue in a fundamental way,'" said Elissa Clapp, Teach For
America's vice president of recruitment and selection. "We are looking for
accomplished individuals who possess the qualities necessary to not only have an
impact on students during their two-year teaching commitment, but to effect long-term
educational and social reform in careers across all sectors."
Teach For America is highly selective, with approximately 17 percent of all applicants
gaining admission in 2005. Ninety-three percent of those accepted held leadership
positions on their campuses or in their communities. On average, they earned GPAs
of 3.5. Teach For America actively recruits on more than 500 college campuses,
seeking applicants from all academic majors, career interests, and backgrounds who
"demonstrate a record of outstanding achievement, persistence in the face of
challenges and a strong sense of personal responsibility." Currently, 3,500 corps
members are teaching in over 1,000 schools in 22 regions across the country; more
than 10,000 Teach For America alumni continue working from inside and outside the
field of education for the fundamental changes necessary to ensure educational
excellence and equity.
