Mary Read Courtney '85 was recently recognized by the Rochester, NY, City School District as "an exemplary first year teacher."

Courtney began teaching chemistry and earth science in 2007 in three of the high schools at Edison Tech in Rochester, after becoming certified through Empire State College in a program that places teachers in high-need districts. In the spring of 2008, Courtney won a 2008 Career in Teaching First Year Teacher Award.

Among those nominating her for the honor was Joseph Baldino '79, principal of the School of Business, Finance and Entrepreneurship at Edison.

Courtney earned her St. Lawrence degree in chemistry, was a President's Scholar and member of the leadership honor society Omicron Delta Kappa.
