Associate Professor of Government Assis Malaquias has been awarded an honorary
position in one of South Africa's prominent universities. He has been has been
appointed as Extraordinary Associate Professor at the University of the Western
Cape (UWC), having developed strong links with the institution in recent years,
including time he spent there during a sabbatical from St. Lawrence.
UWC was first established under the Apartheid regime in 1960 as a small ethnic
college for "colored" students. Today, UWC has more than 12,000 students and
has a distiguinshed record in assisting educationally disadvantaged students
gain access to higher education and succeed in their studies.
Malaquias has been a member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1996. He is a
graduate of the University of Winnipeg and earned master's degree and Ph.D.
from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He coordinates the African
studies program at St. Lawrence and is on the African Studies Advisory Board.
Malaquias specializes in international relations, African politics and development
economies.
