John D. Gursky '07, of Baldwinsville, N.Y., received the Kurt
Swinton Scholarship to attend the Couchiching Institute on Public
Affairs in Orillia, Ontario, Canada, this summer. Gursky, a 2003
graduate of Charles W. Baker High School, plans to major in French and
Canadian Studies.
The Couchiching Institute is Canada's oldest public-affairs forum. Its
stated mission is to "increase the awareness and understanding of domestic
and international issues amongst people in Canada, through open and
inclusive discussion, without advocacy or partisanship." The theme of the
2004 conference was Religion, Pluralism and the Secular State. The Swinton
Scholarship, awarded on a competitive basis through application, makes
financial assistance available for youth delegates up to age 25 to attend
the annual summer conference.
Gursky participates in the student government organization, the Thelomathesian
Society, at St. Lawrence.
