Jacques Martin '75, head coach of the National Hockey League's Ottawa
Senators, will coach the NHL East All-Star team.
The NHL made the announcement January 9, also stating that Marc Crawford,
Vancouver's coach, will lead the Western Conference. The head coach and
assistant coach of the two teams with the best points percentages for
games played through January 8 determined the positions in each conference.
Philadelphia's Ken Hitchcock will serve as Martin's assistant.
The All-Star game will be played in Sunrise, Fla. -- home of the Florida
Panthers -- on Feb. 2.
The Associated Press stated, "Martin has done a remarkable job with the
Senators (25-10-5-1), who lead the East while financial troubles surround
the team. Ottawa's loss to Vancouver was just the Senators' fourth in
regulation in 29 games."
Martin holds a bachelor's degree from St. Lawrence in sport and leisure
studies and French, as well as a master's degree from the University of
Ottawa. In addition to playing hockey while a student, he was a member
of Sigma Pi Kappa fraternity. He is scheduled to attend a University alumni
event in Sunrise, Florida, on January 22, when the Senators play the
Panthers.
