Ten St. Lawrence University students, with Director of the Center for
Diversity and Social Justice Margaret Kent Bass, traveled to the Jamaica
community of Mount Vernon in January, working with the Global Volunteers
organization to assist the community in re-building infrastructure there.
The students were enrolled in a half-credit course on the history and
culture of Jamaica, and several conducted independent research projects
while there. Bass reports that due to the excellent work done by the
students, the community has asked that continuing connection between
the University and Mount Vernon be established.
Participants were Bea Akuffo '08, Wes Ballantyne '08, Jessa Davis '08, Emilio
Coletta '09, Marlise Hernandez '08, Elizabeth Mittlefehldt '08, Mukhaye
Muchimuti '08, Susanne Pritchard '08, Jesus Ruiz '08 and Luke Tobin '09.
