St. Lawrence University's student government organization, the
Thelomathesian Society, and its president, Jon Cardinal '08, of
Ogdensburg, contributed approximately $3,500 to the local
2006 Harvest Walk fund-raiser, helping the event surpass its goal and
collect some $14,500 in total gifts.
The event, held annually in Ogdensburg to fund programs that assist
in feeding the hungry, raised $9,000 last year and had a goal of $10,000 for
2006. Cardinal, who has participated in the event since he was in high
school and active in the Key Club, presented a donation of $2,000 from
Thelmo to the organization, plus approximately $1,500 that he raised
on his own, through pledges.
In an interview with his hometown newspaper, the Ogdensburg Journal,
Cardinal stated, "St. Lawrence University students want to give back to the
North Country. When I spoke to the student government representatives, I
told them we call this home for eight months of the year. I made the
argument that we had an obligation to give back for all the opportunities
the North Country has given us."
All of the funds raised through the annual Harvest Walk go directly to those
in need in the area, through Catholic Charities, Renewal House, the Salvation
Army and other organizations.
