Geology majors helped 110 fifth-graders from Canton Middle School have fun
with geology recently. The local students were hosted for an afternoon of
geology-related activities and demonstrations, all designed and demonstrated by
St. Lawrence students. Among the activities: a model of a glacier, including watching it advance and information about glaciation in the North Country; a rock deformation experiment, showing off the University's collection of meteorites and fossils, helping students make a connection between large-meteor impact and extinction of dinosaurs; the eruption of a
"volcano"; and an opportunity for the fifth-graders to "collect" their own rock samples.
No definitive word at press time about which group of students enjoyed the day more!
