Faculty, students and graduates of St. Lawrence were among the scientists presenting
research at the 2008 Joint Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America,
Soil Science Society of America, American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science
Society of America and the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Sciences, held
October 5-9 in Houston, Texas. Approximately 10,000 scientists attended the events.
Professor of Geology J. Mark Erickson gave two presentations, "Paleotemperatures through the Younger Dryas Interval at Glovers Pond, Northern N J, Derived from Fossil Chironomidae"
(with Kate D. Zubin-Stathopoulos, Department of Geosciences, University of Calgary, and
Maggie J. Simmons, Department of Geology, University of Kansas, Lawrence) and
"Evidence for Ealy Diagenesis in Presence of Soft Parts from Panopea Occidentalis in
the Fox Hills Formation, North Dakota" (with Diane burns, Department of Geology/Geography, Eastern Illinois University).
Assistant Professor of Geology Antun Husinec gave a presentation, "Kimmeridgian-Tithonian
cyclic carbonates of Adriatic Platform: Implications for climate and eustatis
fluctuations in western Tethys during a global greenhouse" (with J.F. Read, geological
sciences, Virginia Tech).
Charles Harman '09, of Southport, CT, and Rafferty Sweeney '09, of Longmont, CO, gave
two presentations with Husinec and Read, "Aptian Platform-Interior Facies of Adriatic
Plaform, Southern Croatia" and "Cyclicity of Barremian Tidal Flat Deposits of
Southern Adriatic Platform, Croatia."
Associate Professor Jeffrey Chiarenzelli gave a presentation with Evan Blumberg '08,
of Johnson City, NY, " Geochemical Investigation of Rocks from the Argillaceous
Rock Atlas." Chiarenzelli also gave the presentation "Geochronology of Adirondack
Pegmatites by LA-MC-ICP-MS" with Marian Lupulescu, New York State Museum; Scott
Johnston and Alex Pullen, Department of Geosciences, University of Arizona, Tucson;
and Joseph Chiarenzelli.
Department Chair and Associate Professor Cathy Shrady, and Graham Baird '08 presented on "The Nature of Ottawan Deformation in the Adirondack Lowlands." Shrady was also a co-convener and presided over an all-day special session on "Recent Advances in the Understanding of the Adirondack and Southern Grenville Province Tectonics."
