A St. Lawrence alumna is among the 15 current and former women members of
the U.S. Senate included in a new exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution
in Washington.
Susan Collins '75 (R-Maine) is in Melina Mara's Smithsonian
Institution exhibit, "Changing the Face of Power: Women in the U.S. Senate,"
May 22 through September 7 in the institution's Arts and Industries
Building.
Mara, a Tacoma, Washington, freelancer, spent three years putting together
38 candid shots of the 14 current female senators and one former senator
because, she told the Associated Press, she believes "professional women too often are
portrayed in domestic settings." Though they are in different parties -
nine are Democrats and five Republicans - all 14 of the senators meet
regularly to talk about issues and some of the photos picture these meetings.
