Michael Burgess '75 and John Byrne '02 both have positions with the state of
New York, in Governor Eliot Spitzer's administration.
Burgess, who earned his St. Lawrence degree in government, has been nominated to serve as commissioner of the
Office for the Aging. He has served as the executive director
for the New York State Alliance for Retired Americans since 2004 and
prior to that, he was executive director for the New York
Statewide Senior Action Council. From 1989 to 1996, Burgess was
director of the Non-Profit Resource Center, and he was also executive
director for the Statewide Emergency Network for Social and Economic
Security. He was a policy analyst for the Office for the Aging in 1981 and 1982.
Byrne, a former admissions counselor
at St. Lawrence, has been named a special assistant to the governor. He has
taken a leave of absence from the University of Buffalo Law School. Byrne earned
his St. Lawrence degree in government and also holds an MBA from Clarkson University.
