Emeritus Professor of Geography William Romey was selected to receive the highest award given by the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NGAT), the Neil Miner Award.

On October 22, at the 2006 annual meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA) in Philadelphia, the association presented the award to Romey, "for exceptional contributions to the stimulation of interest in the earth sciences."

Romey, who was named an emeritus professor in 1993, also presented a paper at the meeting, co-authored with Alexander R. McBirney, emeritus professor of geology at the University of Oregon, entitled "Communicating about the Geosciences: Self-Publishing and Distributing Books." The paper was about the Web site Romey and McBirney created to make the public aware of self-published books by geoscientists, www.libri-terrarum.com.

Each year since 1953, the NAGT presents the Neil Miner Award to an individual for exceptional contributions to the stimulation of interest in the earth sciences. The award "commemorates Miner's concern for personal excellence and effective teaching. His ideals, his notably unselfish outlook on life and his personal philosophy inspired his fellow teachers as well as his students."
