Three students of Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures Steven White
are becoming seasoned scholars of translation -- their work has been published
in several academic journals.
Beacons, a publication of the American Translators Association's
Literary Division showcasing translations of the works of the foremost writers
from languages other than English, has published five translations of
poems by Chilean Teresa Calderón in its 2002 edition, done by Justin Bland '03,
of Falmouth, Massachusetts; Sylvia Mello '04, of Danvers, Massachusetts;
and Tia Rabine '02, of Schenectady, New York. Beacons is edited by
Alexic Levitin, of SUNY Plattsburgh's English department.
Calderón visited the Translation Workshop taught by White during the fall 2001
semester. The students read their translations with her at bilingual presentations
she gave at St. Lawrence and at SUNY Potsdam.
Bland, Mello and Rabine also recently had an article one for one of
White's translation workshops published in Translation Review, the top U.S. journal in
the field of translation studies. To read more on that topic,
