Faculty and staff have prevailed over students -- in a just-for-fun benefit
basketball game, that is.
The event pitted the Faculty-Staff All-Stars, coached by Vice President of the
University and Dean Grant Cornwell, against the Student Stickouts, coached by
Women's Basketball Head Coach Jennifer Kroll. Referees for the game, the proceeds
of which go towards the University's overall contribution to the county chapter
of the United Way, were
President Daniel Sullivan (who played basketball for the Saints while a
student) and Men's Basketball Head Coach Chris Downs.
Game organizer Robert DeGraaff, professor of English and chair of the University's United Way effort,
provided this post-game report:
"Dean Cornwell's coaching debut was a resounding success, no doubt due to his
pre-game pep talk, as the All-Stars whipped the Stickouts 41 to 31.The dean,
however, claiming an injury (unspecified), refused even to attempt the slam-dunk
that so many had paid to see. The gloom lifted, though, when the fabulous SLU Dance
Ensemble staged their half-time show.
"During the three-point shooting contest that followed, (Associate Dean of Student
Life and Co-Curricular Education) Rance Davis '80 caused a moment of consternation
when he nearly toppled the backstop with an indescribable overhand cannon shot,
after which (Associate Vice President for Development) Tom Pynchon calmly sank a
pair.
"In the second half, (Associate Director of Counseling Services) Daniel Hernandez put Tom
in the shade with a 28-foot swish. President Sullivan officiated ably without
leaving center court, calling fouls only when people were knocked down. Coach
Downs, however, added a new dimension to refereeing with a nifty, if unexpected,
block of a faculty lay-in; 'the students need a little help,' he was heard to mutter."
DeGraaff also reports that the event raised $264 for the local United Way,
bringing the total raised by the University community to date to over $4,000. Keen
competition continues in other venues, as well, according to DeGraaff: the physics and
Canadian studies departments are said to be neck-and-neck in contributions so far;
those who prevail will be treated to dinner at the Sullivans' home.
