Ashley Grey '15, of Astoria, N.Y., participated in the CSTEP Mini-Course at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, N.Y. January 7 through 11. Students from 13 colleges and universities participated in the program, conducted by BNL researchers and technicians.
A geology major, Grey said of the experience, "The Brookhaven CSTEP mini-course was informative, engaging, and busy. We attended lectures and toured the ion collider, the center for nanomaterials and synchotron light source; gave a brief presentation of our research interests; interviewed scientists ranging the gamut of scientific disciplines; and wrote a formal report on the interviews we conducted."
During the program students explored topics in energy, physics, biology, biofuels, chemistry, protein crystallography, 3-D visualization and other topics related to research being conducted at BNL. Students participating in the CSTEP program are encouraged to apply for 10-week summer programs.
