Volunteer groups from St. Lawrence University once again spread out to
various areas of the country to help community organizations during the
2008 spring break.
A group of Habitat for Humanity volunteers built
a house with the Eastern Shore of Virginia Habitat for Humanity chapter in
Treherneville. Participating were Nick Blaise '10, Kristin Blundon '11,
Tovah Burstein '08, Brijlal Chaudhari '10, Adriana Cordero-Calderon '09,
Katie Demakos '10, Katherine Kingsbury Dreher '09, Malorie Gardner '10,
Jessy Gill '11, Molly Hall '10, Katie Hoskinson '11, Rachael Jaffe '10,
Dymon Lewis '11, Peterson Maina '10, Grant Daniel Novak '11, Kevin C.
O'Connor '08, Somphone Sonenarong '11, Candice Vallejos '08, Dining and
Conference Services Director Cindy Atkins and Center for Civic Engagement
and Leadership Project Director Anne Townsend.
For several years, volunteers from St. Lawrence have traveled during spring
break to the St. Francis Inn, a Franciscan living and working
community in the inner city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to help
in its soup kitchen and women's center. Volunteering this year were Rachel
Lim '09, Gabriel Colas '10, Khadeeja Hamid '11, Libby Hayden '11, Whitney
Koch '11, Alan Martino '11, Jeremy Mwenda '11, Nicole Shaffner '11,
Matt Spearing '08, Brewer Bookstore Principal Clerk Joe Tebo and Newman
Center Director Sister Bethany Fitzgerald.
Coordinator of the Center for Diversity and Social Justice Stacey Sommerfield
organized a group of students who traveled to New Orleans to assist in
continuing clean-up and repairs in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,
with Greenlight New Orleans and the Association of Community Organizations
for Reform Now. Participating were Will MacIver '11, Michael Baraldi '11,
Julia Logan '11, Danielle Winters '11, Veena Reid '11, Allison Diehlmann '11,
Abigail Cartner '11, Abigail Scott '11 and Anna Daskovsky '11.
