Thelmo Vice President of Senate Affairs Alli Shea '13 not only bicycled across the country during the summer, she also stopped along the way to help build houses in eight communities and raise money for affordable housing. Shea participated in a program called Bike & Build, which involves some 300 young adults every summer.

The program offers eight different routes for a summer of service. Shea biked from Nag's Head, North Carolina, to San Diego, California, with the entire venture taking 70 days. That meant 55 days riding, 12 days building and three days "off" during the trip. To participate, Shea personally raised $4,000 and her group raised a total of $156,000.
Shea first heard about the program from her first-year "pre-trip" leader, Isabelle "Izzy" Bruno '11, who had done a different charity biking event, and through that, heard about the Bike & Build program. She was also inspired by her father, who had embarked on a bicycle trip as a personal challenge.
The experience was rewarding for Shea, who said, "It was both selfish and selfless, if that makes sense."
