The American Film Institute (AFI) recently announced an updated list
of the top 100 films of all time, and two of them star St. Lawrence University
graduates.
Coming in at Number 50 was the 2001 release The Lord of the Rings: The
Fellowship of the Ring, starring Viggo Mortensen '80 as Aragorn. It is one
of three films based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien and starring Mortensen.
In the Number 81 spot was 1970's Spartacus, starring Kirk Douglas '39
in the title role. The iconic film, especially the line "I am Spartacus!," is
referred to in many other movies.
Another film on the list (Number 33), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, was
released in 1975; its producer is Michael Douglas, Kirk Douglas' son. The
elder Douglas starred in the Broadway stage adaptation of the Ken Kesey
novel, and for many years owned the film production rights to it, but never
succeeded in getting it produced.
Both Douglas and Mortensen have been awarded honorary degrees by St. Lawrence.
