On the evening of Saturday November 12, 2011 The Annex hosted a Singer-Songwriter Competition at Pub 56. Thirteen SLU students performed their original works, which were judged by a panel of faculty judges. Judging the event were the director of the string orchestra and instructor of strings Christian Hosmer, instructional specialist in music performance Barbara Phillips-Farley, and associate professor of music In-Sil Yoo. The contestants competed for prizes including $50 for 1st place, $25 for 2nd place, and a pick-punch for 3rd place, as well as a live airing on KSLU.
It was a very close competition, and all contestants performed admirably. The students represented a wide range of musical genres and talents. According to the judges' scores, 1st place was captured by Matthew Dudley '14. In 2nd place was Michael Brewster '15 and in 3rd place was Kelly Prime '12.
The Annex's first ever Singer-Songwriter Competition was a successful event which they intend host again in future years. Many thanks from The Annex to all who came out to participate in or support the event!
