I am very pleased to be a member of the SLU community. Even though I graduated in 2004, I still maintain contacts with students and faculty on campus. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saint Lawrence and wouldn't change a thing. My love for languages is really what made Saint Lawrence University so important to me, as they not only have a strong language department but also a wonderful study abroad program.
I participated in the Spain program in 2002. I am still in contact with my host family from Madrid. We exchange e-mails at least two times per year. When I returned to campus I continued with languages and worked in the Spanish writing center and was also a peer tutor for Spanish. Along with being a tutor to help fellow students with their papers, I also became a reading tutor at Canton Elementary school where I worked with 1st grade students on simple reading tasks. I also worked as a teaching assistant for an elementary Spanish course with Dr. Ilia Casanova-Marengo.
I chose SLU was for it's great reputation for having an outstanding language program. Once I started at SLU I realized that the reputation was 100% justified. I was lucky to have a Spanish teacher in high school who had attended St. Lawrence University and recommended the school to me. I am fluent in Spanish and I was thrilled to also take intermediate French and elementary Italian during my time at St. Lawrence.
Another benefit of attending SLU is the education program that allows students to become certified 7-12 before entering any graduate programs
