Doctor Brezault co-organized a seminar with Doctor Erica Johnson (Pace University) at the American Comparative Literature Association (New York City, March 20-23 2014) on "Memory as a colonial capital."
She also presented a talk entitled: "The Value of Memory in Selected Testimonies about the Civil Wars in Africa.” She examined two examples of testimonies about the recent Civil Wars and genocides in Africa, Beah’s A Long Way Gone and Kidder’s Strength in What Remains. In different ways, both books are carefully crafted for a Western audience and they dramatize the events, sometimes formulaically and sometimes in a self-aggrandizing way. Could we bear witness to the atrocities of the war in a more focused and less scripted way?
