A Celebration of the Life and Poetry
of Pablo Neruda (1904 - 1973)

Tuesday, September 28, 2004 in Carnegie 10

Many students, faculty, and even alumni and staff gathered in Carnegie 10 to attend the bilingual celebration of the centenary of Pablo Neruda. Dr. Steven White, chair of the Modern Languages department, organized the event and introduced the audience to the poet by playing a tape of Neruda himself reading “en voz alta” his poem Canto XII from his poetry collection Canto general. Dr. Evelyn Jennings, coordinator of Caribbean/Latin American Studies, did a bilingual reading of one of Neruda’s poems. Steven White played a track from his own CD with a reading of one of Neruda’s poems. Bilingual readings of poetry were also done by language students Charlie Bour '05 and Laura Durán '05, and by English professor Rosa Soto. The group then participated together in a reading of Canto XII and an English translation by Jack Schmitt. The audience then watched a screening of a 1972 interview with the poet, entitled ''Pablo Neruda: Poet'' by Pepé Sánchez, narrated in English by Douglas Harris.

"I have resurrected many times,
from the depths of defeated stars, reconstructing the thread of eternities
that I filled with my hands."
