Dr. Lee A. Makela, Associate Professor of East Asian History at Cleveland State University in Ohio, gave a lecture entitled "Contemporary Urban Japan." His lecture explored Tokyo's distinct neighborhoods, contemporary architectural styles, observable variations in local lifestyles, quirky modern cultural traits and aspects of the contemporary art scene in search of that which makes Tokyo an appropriate and representative example of today's Japan - as opposed to just another New York City clone located somewhere "out there" in far-off East Asia.
