Description of Arabic courses
Arabic 101 (offered during the fall)
The course provides students with an introduction to Modern Standard Arabic and Arab culture. It is designed for students who have never studied Arabic before and begins with an introduction to Arabic sounds and letters. The teaching and learning emphasizes the functional use of Arabic and communication in context by means of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course also introduces students to aspects of Arabic culture and everyday life in the Middle East. At the end of the course, students will be able to read and write Arabic at a basic level.
Arabic 102 (offered during the spring)
This is a continuation of Arabic 101. The students of this class will learn to differentiate between verbs, nouns, and adjectives, to conjugate verbs in the present and the past. Also it wills emphasis on the four communication skills, reading, listening, writing and speaking. Understand more complex elements of Arabic culture and the Arabic Writing. Prerequisite: ARAB 101 or equivalent.
Arabic 103 (offered during the fall)
This course is geared to consolidating skills gained in the previous two semesters while enhancing the ability to converse and conduct oneself in Arabic. Reading skills are enhanced by exposure to more sophisticated examples of literature. Original written expression is encouraged through the composition of short essays. Prerequisite: ARAB 102 or equivalent.
Arabic 104 (offered during the spring)
This course focuses on expressing yourself; telling about your experiences, expressing opinions and wishes, presenting persuasive speeches. Social roles will be practiced and many cultural topics will be discussed. Grammar will be systematically reviewed. This course involves reading and discussing biographies, geographies, national and religious holidays, and traditions of the Arab World. Arabic media (movies, songs and on-line resources) are used as supplement to the readings which expand contexts and vocabulary for further interaction in Arabic. Prerequisite: ARAB 103 or equivalent
