McNair and CSTEP members and buddies are invited to attend a presentation by poet, short story writer, and filmmaker Sherman Alexie (of Smoke Signals fame). This cultural trip will be on Oct. 5 from 5 p.m. to midnight. We will be traveling to SUNY Oswego. It is free, but you need to sign up well in advance of the trip.
Text Box: On Friday afternoon, October 8, there will be a trip to the University of Buffalo to attend the Statewide Student Graduate School Awareness Conference. The conference will take place on Saturday, and we will be returning home Saturday evening. This is an excellent conference, and it is free. Please contact Carol  for more information and to sign up.
CSTEP Recruitment—CSTEP members and buddies are asked to encourage students who may be potential members to apply for CSTEP. They can call the office to get their questions answered. Also Text Box: bring them by, if you can. 
McNair Recruitment—The McNair Program is wrapping up its recruitment of juniors this month. The new cohort will be announced in the next newsletter.
A Pre-McNair Horizons Program is being instituted this semester for qualifying sophomores and first year students. The new Pre-McNair Scholars will be announced in the next newsletter also.
Carol will be out at two different professional growth conferences this October. They will be on Oct. 14 and 15 and Oct. 27, 28, 29.
Text Box: called to say she received a call from the Dean of the U. Penn Post- Baccalaureate Pre-Health program announcing her acceptance there. Congratulations, Kandyce!  Shirley Obioha and Toyin Showole ‘04 kept in touch this summer as they completed a summer anatomy class prior to their first year of medical school in Syracuse. They joined us for dinner in Syracuse when the McNair Scholars went there for a tour.  Sara Morrison ‘00 worked with the Clarkson McNair Program and taught some math for our summer McNair Program and then Text Box: Travis Babcock  ‘04 is attending City University of New York for his graduate work and coordinating a program at the Mountbatten Internship Programme in NYC. Way to go, Travis!Ohene Cornelius ‘04 was accepted into the Writing Program at Iowa State.  Great job, Odie! Prisca Fall ‘03 emailed to  announce her new position in NYC at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer. She’s working as a Physician Office Assistant (POA). She’s excited about her work and her prospects for going on to graduate school sometime in the future. Super work, Prisca!  Kandyce McGill ‘04 Text Box: drove cross country to her new graduate program at the University of Colorado. CSTEP alum from one of the original program classes—Randy Sieminski—contacted me. Randy is Director of Media Relations for the Florida Panthers. Andy Pitoniak, ‘03, is a research assistant for the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory in Utica and hopes to go on to graduate school for a Masters and PhD.  CSTEP Buddy Kendall Landers  has been named to the National Dean’s List. Congrats, Kendall! Word has it that Esther Ndungo ‘04 was accepted into the medical program at Text Box: UPCOMING EVENTS

Text Box:   Career Services Peer Advisor Ryane Lokey conducts a workshop on resume building at the first McNair/CSTEP meeting in September. Ryane holds office hours for students in the McNair/CSTEP office every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and in the Career Services Office from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. If you need help with your resume or want to learn more about what Career Services and Leadership Education have to offer, feel free to stop in and make and appointment with Ryane.

Text Box: Syracuse University. Congrats, Esther! Besides her acceptance to Temple University, Candice Rowser ’02, wrote that she was accepted to St. John’s University Doctor of Arts Program. The program director contacted her about it.  Sahiry Rodriguez ’07 was recently accepted as student representative to the SLU Alumni Board of Trustees. Randy Olivo is also on that board. Congrats, both of you! Kudos to Terrill Dean, CSTEP alum. Terrill is now Director at the Utica Rome EOP/CSTEP Program. Fehmida Lakhi ‘04 called and reported that she is completing her final credits before taking an MCAT in the spring. She is continuing her plans to apply to medical schools and preparing for a May ‘05 wedding.
