On Election Day, St. Lawrence County has consistently voted Republican candidates for the majority of its political history. A new trend emerged in the 1970’s and 1980’s which indicated St. Lawrence County residents were beginning to switch their political allegiances. Since 1992, St. Lawrence County has consistently voted for the Democratic presidential candidate. The presidential race is one example among several different offices which indicates the county has become more competitive politically between Republicans and Democrats. My research addresses the political, social and economic factors contributing to the increasing fortunes of the Democratic Party in St. Lawrence County.
