Comedy isn’t all just fun and games, says Matt Hunziker ’14. Matt started his career as a comedian in bar basements and restaurant back rooms. His hard work paid off when he began performing in clubs, which “have more people, so the energy is higher. It’s a really great feeling when you share something you’ve worked on with an audience and they connect with the material,” he says.
During his junior spring in St. Lawrence’s New York City Semester, Matt spent free time performing stand-up comedy all over the city, which he says was “an opportunity I had never had before.”
Matt interned with Andy Engel, founder of the Manhattan Comedy School and director of the New Talent at Gotham Comedy Club. “I assisted with advertising for the school and booking and promoting shows at the club,” he says. “I also contributed to video projects as an editor.”
“Being around so many passionate and creative people was incredibly motivating,” Matt, a native of of Glenville, N.Y., says. He adds: “The Semester allowed me to take full advantage of the cultural and artistic opportunities New York City has to offer.”
A multi-field major, Matt says he “absolutely” plans to return to the City after graduating. “One of the wonderful things about the Semester is how many people you make connections with, and I can’t wait to continue working with them.” --Danielle McBride ’14
