Mathematics Major Requirements

Eleven math courses are required to complete a major in mathematics. These courses must include MATH 135 and 136, or their equivalent.  (For example, in the form of AP credit.)  Math majors must also take MATH 205, 280, either 305 or 306, and either 315 or 316. Furthermore, CS 140 can also count towards the major. However, MATH 110, 123 and 134 may not be counted toward the major.

At least four of the eleven units must be at the 300 level or above. But note that your choices among MATH 305, 306, 315, and 316 count as two of these four courses.  A math SYE would count as a third such course; see below.

Students planning to major in mathematics are encouraged to complete MATH 280 before the end of their sophomore year because this course is a prerequisite for many courses at the 300 level.

Students considering graduate work in mathematics are strongly encouraged to take MATH 217 (Linear Algebra) along with all of MATH 305, 306, 315, and 316 (a full year each of analysis and algebra).

Important: an SYE (Senior Year Experience) is required, either in mathematics as one of the eleven courses in the major or by completing a SYE outside the department. Please consult with the department chair to arrange a math SYE.

Students should also consult the student handbook for further university-wide GPA and course distribution requirements necessary for graduation.
