Student Profiles
A broad cross-section of St.Lawrence students choose to major or minor in the Department of Math, Computer Science, and Statistics. Meet six of these students here.

Becca Gilbert is a senior mathematics major and computer science. She spent the last summer at an REU at Louisiana State University where she conducted research with a group of undergraduates from across the country. She and her coworkers investigated growth functions of subgroups of Coxeter groups, and discovered the growth function for the monoid of the figure-eight knot complement. This year, Becca is conducting her senior honors project in Knot Theory, a subfield of topology. She plans to attend graduate school to study algebraic topology after graduation.
Richard Torres is a Senior Mathematics major and Computer Science minor from Brooklyn, New York. He has spent his last two summers doing research in math and math education. His first research dealt with enumeration in Knot Theory, and his most recent research was on Math Anxiety and observing certain factors never before studied and associated with its development. He is currently in the process of data collection and analysis. Richard is the President of the Math Club here at St. Lawrence. He enjoys Algebra, Number Theory, Algebraic Topology, and Combinatorics. Apart from his academic interests, Richard enjoys traveling, running, and swimming.
Jamie Perconti, currently a junior, is a double major in mathematics and computer science. This summer, he participated in an REU at the University of West Georgia, where he worked with other undergraduates to find Ramsey numbers for difference d-free sets and to show that most complete bipartite graphs are super edge-graceful. After finishing his time at St.Lawrence, he plans to continue studying both mathematics and computer science in graduate school. He is at present the only left-handed member of St.Lawrence's fencing club, and he sings in the Early Music Singers and the Laurentian Singers, two of the Music Department's choral ensembles.
James Douglass is a junior computer science major and sociology minor. His biggest project right now is developing a plug-in for Drupal, a PHP and MySQL content management system with a web interface that will allow SLU students to determine their carbon footprint using customized input based upon certain characteristics of the student's lifestyle. After graduation, James hopes to take up study at Dai Bosatsu Zendo in the Catskills to investigate life.
Stefka Antonova is a senior at St.Lawrence pursuing a mathematics-economic major with a minor in computer science. In 2007 Stefka completed a summer research project in graph theory in which she investigated the graphical properties of certain degree sequences. Stefka spent the spring 2008 semester in Washington D.C., where she held internships with Ameriprise Financial, Merrill Lynch and the American Electronics Association. While there she also completed a research project on the high-tech industry in China. After college, Stefka is interested in a career in finance that will combine both of her majors.
Tendayi Chakanyuka spent the last summer interning in Morgan Stanley’s technology division where he worked as part of a global middleware technology team. Tendayi’s summer experience greatly influenced the Computer Science SYE honors project that he is currently working on. The focus of his research is to evaluate the performance and efficiency of three different middleware technologies (SOAP, RMI and CORBA) that are currently in practical use in different implementations of the service oriented architecture. Through this research, he hopes to come up with a scorecard for each middleware technology.
