Guest Speaker - Dr. Adam Parker on Deranged Mathematics

4:00pm to 5:00pm

Dr. Adam Parker from Wittenberg University will give a talk on Deranged Mathematics.

Deranged Mathematics

Abstract:  Imagine a deck of cards.  Shuffling them corresponds to a permutation of the cards, while a shuffle that moved every card from its original position is a called a derangement.  In this talk we will calculate the surprising percentage of permutations that are derangements, as well as discuss a few reasons that derangements are interesting.  No background will be necessary to understand the talk.

Dr. Parker holds undergraduate degrees in mathematics and psychology from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin. He joined the Wittenberg faculty in 2005.
