Defining our philanthropic priorities is an important step to effective philanthropy. We give to charity to help make a difference in the world that we cannot do alone. Taking the time to reflect on what is important in your life, how you have been helped, what will make the world a better place, and which charities are doing that work in a way that meets your beliefs can help you focus your giving, set goals, and derive satisfaction from the results of your support. That simple, organized approach is what led Bob Lyle '58 to give St. Lawrence a larger role in his philanthropic plan several years ago. “Supporting higher education is an important part of my philanthropic plan,” says Bob. “Our future is brighter if we can offer young minds a stimulating environment where they can grow intellectually and emotionally. St. Lawrence provided that opportunity for me, and I want to help ensure that future generations will have access to a St. Lawrence experience.” With this philanthropic priority defined, Bob researched ways to meet his objective. “I chose to name St. Lawrence owner and beneficiary on a life insurance policy. It was an easy gift plan to create, and I structured the gift so that I may deduct annual premium payments. Most of all, I feel a sense of accomplishment, meeting my philanthropic goal by supporting the education of future students at St. Lawrence.

We are all philanthropists. How effective is your philanthropy? Making the most of our giving and volunteering is worth some reflection. Order our Philanthropic Planner to better define your philanthropy, craft your own mission statement, and create your own philanthropic plan.
