Guidelines for Counting Gifts in 50th Reunion Fundraising
Many alumni create a deferred gift in celebration of their 50th reunion to say thank you to St. Lawrence and to help future Laurentians. Recognizing that this process takes time, the University wants to help alumni over a longer time period so they may fully evaluate a range of options and create their gift plan when the time is right for them. This will allow alumni the freedom and confidence to establish their gift during a wider time frame and still have it count in 50th anniversary fundraising totals.
What is the time period for counting planned gifts?
Planned gifts created after the 45th reunion (or after the 45th cluster reunion) year and until the 50th reunion celebration will count in 50th reunion fundraising totals. This will allow most classes a 5-year time period to consider their gifts (a few cluster reunion classes may have four years).
How will gift value be determined?
In most cases, gift value is determined at the time the gift plan is created. For example, a bequest for a specific amount or a gift annuity is valued on the date that it is created. In some cases (a percentage of a retirement plan for example) the donor may need to provide a best guess as to the value of the gift at the time it was created.
What if I've already planned a gift but have not informed the University?
Informing the University of your plan makes it "new" to the University and so the value will count in reunion fundraising.
Will my gift also count in the fundraising campaign?
Gifts created during this time period may also count for other University purposes, such as other fundraising campaigns, challenge grants and fundraising for specific projects.
May I restrict the use of my planned gift and have it count?
While many individuals wish their planned gift to ultimately go to the University unrestricted, others wish to restrict their gifts to such areas as endowment or scholarship support. All gifts count in 50th reunion fundraising totals.
I'm thinking of planning a gift and would like to speak confidentially to a fellow alumnus who has planned a gift. How do I do that?
Alumni involved with the 50th reunion planned giving initiative have offered their names as confidential references for questions from alumni of all classes:
