Class of 1959 Endowed Scholarship
Background
The Class of 1959 Endowed Scholarship was established in 1999 and awarded as an expendable scholarship between 1999 and 2003. In 2002 it become a permanently restricted endowment and a fundraising effort was launched to reach a fully-endowed funding level of at least $100,000 by the 50th anniversary reunion celebration in June 2009.

Description
This scholarship is administered as a permanently restricted endowment fund at St. Lawrence. The scholarship will be fully endowed when the principal reaches a book value of at least $100,000. The Class of 1959 is currently in a fundraising drive to reach that goal by their 50th anniversary reunion in 2009.

The annual income from this permanently restricted endowment fund will be distributed according to University policy as established by the Board of Trustees, and awarded to students attending St. Lawrence University.

Criteria
The Class of 1959 Endowed Scholarship is administered by the vice president for business and finance or designates and awarded yearly. Selection of the recipient(s) will be made by the director of financial aid or designates after a student has been admitted and the amount of aid for which he or she is qualified has been determined. Awarding will be based on the following guideline:

Preference will be given to deserving students who demonstrate financial need.


Endowment Balance
The endowment balance is $17,852.00 as of August 2007.

Recent Recipients
Kristin Carmichael, a 2003 graduate, received support during her undergraduate career. In recent years income from the endowment has been used for general scholarship support.

Gifts
Outright and deferred gifts are encouraged to help meet the funding goal of $100,000. Deferred gift plans created will also count in 50th reunion fundraising totals.
