Mark “Barney” Brown
says, “The best news
that I can offer is that Bea Fairchild ’39 and I are
still alive and doing probably better than we de-
serve. Her increasing macular degeneration slows
her down while my degeneration is pretty much
standard. We are sure enjoying life in our retire-
ment community and we have recently been
blessed with a second great-granddaughter, in
Folsom, about 100 miles from us. Our son, Mark,
is one of the grandfathers and since I am still driv-
ing, we get there now and then. Mark is retired
and has been bitten by the lawn and shrub nurs-
ery bug, so they are not yet doing the traveling
they plan. Our other son, Curtis, has been pro-
moted to director of research and development
for the Bureau of Reclamation.”
Elizabeth List Gardner
writes that she has sold
her home in Darien, Conn., and moved into a
lovely retirement complex in Stamford, Conn. She
says, “I run back and forth to my beach club for
duplicate bridge." She spends four months during
the winter at her Ft. Myers, Fla., beach condomin-
ium. She adds,“I see my three children, six grand-
children and four‘greats’a lot. I feel very fortunate
to still be driving and enjoying life.”
As for myself, all is going well for a soon-to-be
95-
year-old. I am still living-- alone since my wife
died 12 years ago--in the house I built in 1950 on
the shore of the Severn River in Annapolis, Md. I
work out at the Cardiac Rehab gym in the local
hospital three days a week. My daughter lives in
the Chicago area and my son is near Annapolis.
I have seven grandchildren but no great-grand-
children.
Please send me information about yourself or
other Laurentians for publication in the SLU ’40
Class Notes.

The University has informed me that
Delong
Bud” Kellogg
died on February 12, 2013, in
Naples, Fla. I feel very fortunate to have been in
touch with the Kelloggs for 69 years. This made
for happy memories of great get-togethers. For
more on Bud’s life and the Kelloggs’ St. Lawrence
connections, see“In Memory.”
Next year is our 70th Reunion!

The messages from the "Navy Loop" are so
welcoming! Walt Hluch ’47, Bell Herndon ’47
and
Paul Durkin
keep emailing and sending
articles about current and past events. Thanks
so much! Walt has had some health issues but
by the time you read this, I'm sure that he will
be back in "shape"!  Durk has been on the golf
course. He never reveals his scores but the fact
that he gets on the fairway is impressive. And
Bell never ceases to amaze me with the wonder-
ful emails he sends. He and Jean keep very busy.
The 1944 and 1945
Gridirons
have some Navy-
related names you may remember: Lt. Donald H.
Moyer, commanding officer of the Navy Training
Unit; Lt.(j.g.) Albert L. Morrison, executive officer;
Lt.(j.g.) William L. Altenburg, physical education
instructor; WAVE Ensign Ruth Owen, aka Ensign
Benson.
There is a picture of A/S John Nill ’47 in the 1945
Gridiron
featuring the Thelomathesian Soci-
ety. John was president of Thelmo, ably support-
ed by eleven females!! A quote from the
Gridiron:
"
His election was one of the most important fac-
tors in the cementing of Navy and civilian unity
on the campus."
To the rest of the class: Dig out your old
Gridirons
and remember your days at SLU!

Florida is a nice place to be stuck. That's where
Pat and I have been while a broken bone in Pat's
leg mends. When we get back to Michigan is un-
certain. We would surely love to hear news from
classmates.

Richard Vanderbilt
has inquired about the
1950
football scores. He would like to compare
the various scores to determine if the Larries were
one of the best teams of 1950. (Those were the
days!) If you have any pertinent information on
this, contact Dick at 188 Bauer Drive, Melbourne,
FL 32901.
The Newseum in Washington, D.C., is featuring
a documentary on William Randolph Hearst in
which our classmate
Gil Maurer
has a major role.
