Voices of Experience
LAAers share what they tell high school kids
By Macreena A. Doyle
In the world of "word-of-mouth" marking, Laurentian Admissions
Associates could be considered the voices of experience. Across the country,
these graduates of the University talk with prospective students in their
regions, providing information and answering questions. They must be doing
something right, given the record numbers of applications St. Lawrence
is receiving. So, what are they saying? What messages resonate most with
curious high school students?
We asked a few, and here's what they had to say.
“St. Lawrence is a smaller school where students learn to think.
They learn also to develop their communication skills, both oral and written.
Also, students at St. Lawrence are able to develop close relationships
with faculty and other students. By all measures of quality, St. Lawrence
is at the top.”

“I think the biggest impact on prospective students is the interaction
they have with everyone associated with the University. The college application
process these days seems a bit impersonal and what really resonates with
young people is our almost ‘old school’ kindness and understanding
of their situation and what we can do to help.”

“What differentiates the St. Lawrence experience is learning how
to build relationships, which is a useful skill throughout life. The closeness
of the St. Lawrence community, whether in Canton or on a program of study
abroad, fosters this. My freshman dorm, my fraternity and a year on the
program in France were very different experiences, but all shared this
theme of connecting people both in and out of the classroom. While a lot
of schools try to do this, St. Lawrence gets it right.”
