Cheerleaders on Ice
Football and basketball schools have cheerleaders. St. Lawrence, being a “hockey school,”
had had cheerleaders on ice. The Larriettes formed in 1951 and lasted into the 1970s,
as best we can determine (we trust alert Laurentian readers will set us straight on that if
it’s incorrect, at
), performing precision skating routines between
periods at men’s hockey games in Appleton Arena. Their name also fell into the annals
of history, along with its male counterpart, the Larries, as the St. Lawrence team name
morphed into the Saints, also in the 1970s. For more on the evolution of the St. Lawrence
spirit brand” (a term that did not exist until the 21
st
century), see pages 14-15.
