On a PC:

There are different instructions depending on the type of keyboard(s) you have setup, and which program you are using.

Method 1: Microsoft Word Only

CTRL + ' then letter = á é í ó ú
CTRL + ` then letter = à è ì ò ù
CTRL + shift + ` then letter = ñ ã õ
CTRL + shift + ; then letter = ä ë ï ö ü
CTRL + shift + 6 then letter = â î ê ô û
CTRL + shift + 2 then a = å
CTRL + / then o = ø
CTRL + , then c = ç
CTRL + shift + 7 then s = ß
CTRL + shift + 7 then a = æ
CTRL + shift + 7 then o = œ
ALT + CTRL + shift + ? = ¿
ALT + CTRL + shift + 1 = ¡

Method 2: Using an International Keyboard Layout

This is the method that works in our language labs in Carnegie (212 and 214).
1. On the right side of the windows task bar (bottom right hand corner of your screen), find the icon of a blue square with the EN in white. Click on this icon and go to Show Language Bar.
2. When the language bar appears on the upper right hand corner of the screen, go to the second tab in from the left (little keyboard icon). Choose English - International.
3. Now, when you are in this mode, you can use dead keys to create the characters you want. Click on the dead key, then the character you want to put the mark over.
Dead keys:
' (single quote key) = acute accent
` grave accent
~ (shift + `) = tilde
^ (shift + 6) = circumflex
" (shift + ') = umlaut
Using the right ALT key gives you other characters as well.

Method 3: Windows XP Language Options

You can set up various international keyboard layouts on your computer using the control panel in Windows XP.
1. Open the Control Panel (Start menu to Control Panel).
2. If the control panel is set to category view, choose Regional and Language Options.
If the control panel is not set to category view, choose Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.
3. Click the Languages tab near the top of the dialog window.
4. Select the desired keyboard layout from the Default Input Language list and then click Apply.
5. Choose the script:
* If you wish to use complex scripts, right-to-left languages, or Thai, select the first of the two options at the bottom.
• If you wish to use East Asian Languages, select the second option at the bottom.
• Click the details button in the top of the dialog.
6. Click the Add button to add keyboard layouts or IMEs. After you have finished, you may also wish to go back to this dialog and click the Language Bar and/or Key Settings buttons to tweak certain options to your preference.

To use:
1. If you wish to type in a particular language, choose this language as both the Input Language and the Keyboard Layout. For example, for Cyrillic letters, choose Russian.
2. If you wish to type accented characters for many European languages, choose English United States for the Input Languge and United States International as the keyboard layout (see Method 2 above).
3. After you have acknowledged all the dialogs with OK (and, if necessary, restarted your computer), you will be able to type special characters.
4. If you now have several input languages or keyboard layouts installed, you can switch between them by pressing the left ALT key and SHIFT.
5. A little blue square in the Input Language Bar shows what language you have currently selected.

Method 4: ASCII character codes

This method is best if you only rarely need accented characters.
1. Press and hold the right ALT key while entering the 4-digit ASCII number combination listed below on the number keypad.
2. Release the right ALT key and the desired character should appear in your document.
Note: if you are using a keyboard other than US standard, you may need to use the left ALT key rather that the right one.
