Kelsey Redpath '11

Through an internship, Kelsey Redpath '11 helped a local hospital preserve and celebrate its history. A sociology major with a minor in Caribbean and Latin American studies, Kelsey worked at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and Foundation, Ogdensburg, NY, gathering and organizing materials to document its history and publish her findings through Arcadia Books.

With help, Kelsey organized photographs from the organization's own archives, from donations to the program by members of the community, and from library archives. She explained that she and her helpers catalogued boxes of old pictures, then chose selections for the book and wrote captions, which she describes as “a verrrry long process.” She also wrote a paper about the history of hospitals in the U.S., with a focus on Claxton-Hepburn, and says she learned a lot about hospitals, time management, “how long it takes to put a book together and how important it is to keep old photographs and documents in order to preserve history.”

In college, Kelsey took medical sociology classes and also an SLU Summerterm course in Kenya, Health Care Delivery in a Developing Country.  She says, “I shadowed doctors and learned about the inequality in Kenya, so I felt that I was qualified to spend time around hospitals.”

At St. Lawrence, Kelsey was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and the women's lacrosse team.  She spent the fall of 2011 interning for the Education for All Children (EFAC) Foundation, through which families in the U.S. sponsor needy children in Kenya, enabling them to afford secondary school. She also taught at a girls' school and assisted at a boys’ school in Kenya where EFAC children were enrolled.
